SCSImaster & MuxMaster Application
A major electric parts distributor in Texas is using a PICK application (multi-user) on a Data General Computer running DG/UX (Unix).
PROBLEM: Connect 128 user terminal and printer ports to a cpu with minimal cost of wiring and connect buildings together without running special cabling (under city streets) between them.
SOLUTION: Combining the SCSImaster (SC04m) and MuxMaster (WC16) work area concentrators creates an ideal solution to the problem. Since the customer could get access to under street telephone wiring, the only thing left to solve was how to extend link distance and isolate hardware from lighting. An EASYway 8-port repeater was an easy low-cost solution.
The SCSImaster (SC04m) is connected to the SCSI bus of a DG workstation. Standard telco twisted pair wire is used to connect the SCSImaster to the various WC16 MuxMaster port concentrators and an EASYway 8 port repeater.
Although we normally recommend using fiber optics between buildings (lightning, etc); in this case, it was not an option. However, by using a repeater at both ends of the under street telephone wire, the customer agreed that it was the lowest cost to lighting isolation that could be done.
In this configuration, any WC16 port concentrator can be replaced without disturbing other users.
The customer is delighted with the installation. Echo response time is better than what would be expected on Ethernet terminal servers. The cpu is more responsive because of the reduced protocol overhead. Printer ports addresses don't move, eliminating problems associated with using Ethernet terminal servers for printer connections.
The customer's hardware investment is protected. If they choose to move to another platform; such as HP, IBM, Sun, DEC or others, all the communication hardware is usable.
