SCSIserver ^TM for networked printers

A major Telephone Company wanted to centralize their network's printing services to a single SUN workstation. In this manner, they could use their already installed in house wiring and DBX. Ethernet terminal servers weren't usable for the task and they couldn't find a sufficiently reliable embedded board solution.

Problem: How to get a fixed port ID solution so that power outages wouldn't require personal attention to the server system. How to have sufficient control over modem control lines to use the existing DBX system to provide signals for identifying printer availability.

Solution: SCSIserver provides all that is needed without opening the chassis. Connecting directly to the SCSI bus, no slots are required, network overhead is eliminated, overall performance improved.

The customer found that performance was improved for the users and overall network contention was reduced. Further, the cost of using a single print server and SCSIservers was much less expensive than using individuals printer servers, not even counting the savings realized by not having to run new wiring.
