At a centralized message center in the Middle East, Cable & Wireless INCOTEL installed a turn-key messaging system utilizing ABLE MuxMaster products as the key communications element.

PROBLEM : Set up a system with a live standby computer to accommodate 1500 ports supporting standard baud rates as well as 5 and 6 bit character ports at 50, 100 and 200 baud. This system required a manual switch over to the standby. Automated fail-over was unacceptable.

SOLUTION : Three large VAX computers were live with 512 MuxMaster ports on each. A manual switch was used to switch any group of 512 ports to a standby VAX computer in the event of a failure. Further patching arrangements could distribute MuxMaster ports across additional host interfaces in groups of 128 ports.

MINIMUM DOWN TIME is the key word in this application. This site is used for critical message store and forward applications that do not allow for lost or improperly handled messages.

Each FP1xx supports 128 ports on a single twisted pair wire. This means that only eight wires needed to be switched to pick up another processor. The SDLC links assures data integrity . The CS128 rack mount concentrators were provided with a redundant power supply system to eliminate a full 128 port failure mode. CS128 units have 16 port CS016 modules that can be replaced "on-line" for immediate recovery.
